Rites of Valor 2020

Category: Current Events
Ends: 30 June 2021, 23:59:59 CDT (6 days from now)

The Rites of Valor are used to realign your spiritual balance. View more details for requirements.

Details

Create an illustration where your character participates in the Rites of Valor.

the rites

Valorism is the most popular religious identity in Orrison, with the widest range of sub-religions. It is centered around the idea of many spirits and multiple small gods. It is acceptable in Valorism to accept one god or a few gods as patron deities to devote yourself to (many spirits are attached to locations, families, etc, and can be very personal), but it is also just as accepted to have no patron deity and to simply respect spirits as they are.

The backbone of the faith involves the belief in positive and negative karmic energy (not good or bad, just positive and negative) that affect the spirits, which in turn affect the physical world. Helping your own deities through prayer, encouragement, and offerings can help to maintain harmony.

Every living being is a small spirit in and of itself, just with a physical body, so Valorism also teaches that you must treat others with respect as well. When one dies, their energies rejoin the spiritual atmosphere of the world (Fys). The state of their afterlife, whether pleasant or hellish, depends on the state of the physical realm. If harmonic balance is not maintained, the area will cause all spiritual life to suffer. Pressure is put on practitioners because their actions are responsible for the suffering of spirits, and their owns pirits will join them after death.

One can balance their energy by performing certain behaviors and surrounding one's self with certain objects and colors. This can vary from self restraint and punishment to reward and indulgence, as prescribed by Valoric Sages. It includes things like taking pilgrimmages, eating certain foods, and wearing certain colors. The prescribed rituals depend on one's mental state, build, health, recent actions, and eye color and more, such as:

  • Punishment
    • Isolation
    • Fasting
    • Giving up material goods
  • Reward
    • Indulging in rich food
    • Listening to music
    • Attending performances

Spirebreak

Category: Current Events
Ends: 10 July 2021, 23:57:59 CDT (2 weeks from now)

A dream echoes out across the collective consciousness. View more details for requirements.

Details

The Spirebreak

Storm season passes without incident- instead of the harsh torrent of the aria storm and the following clarity of weather, the world is plagued by a persistent and annoying humidity and drizzle. The change causes unease, which only grew as time passed.

The weather does not deter work in Kinstead. Aelius erects a barrier around the lesser spire, and rumours spread that whatever work is ongoing within its limits are what are causing the lack of storms. Many wonder if he's 'solved it'- if his goal was taming the forces of nature and fixing the problems his ancestors caused with the Senescence.

Through this calm, those in Immitheus are able to take the opportunity to fortify their city, and they even are able to help repair the teleport in Ichorrai by referencing the technology they uncovered. Life even returns to a resemblance of normalcy in Ichorrai and Ynochrin.

Then the spire breaks.

A great force rips through the spire itself, causing the entire world to shudder. Quakes plague the earth, exposing new ruins and burying old ones. The crystal spire itself cracks and even shatters, its coloration warping and darknening in jagged splotches and veins through the normally blue crystal, and the sound of it is like superheated glass exploding. From every crack and break spews a miasma, not unlike the storms that it normally produces, but much heavier, much thicker, and absolutely unceasing. The miasma covers the world in a matter of days, darkening the skies.

The Dream

At the same time, everyone in the world experiences a dream simultaneously. It begins as a whistling scream echoing the sounds of the spire's destruction, and plunges each individual into their own personal vision:

You stand in a vast cavern where a great beast sleeps. The cavern is so large, you cannot see its dark edges, and the darkness is so heavy that your eyes hallucinate stars as pinpricks in the blackness. The breath of the creature before you is laborous and ragged, and you can smell the sickness and pain rolling off of its body even from a distance. Someone is holding your hand, and though you cannot see them in the dark, you know who it is-- a loved one, a family member, a stranger... the figure varies from dreamer to dreamer. They say that it has been a very long time since they've seen you, even if you had only seen them just yesterday in the waking world. Then they apologize. Fys is waking up, and that cannot come to pass. If Fys' dream ends, then it will reclaim every shard of its soul, one way or another, and every being on Orrison will die.

The Aria's lullaby has been interrupted, her song changed to a scream, but now she is free to use her voice to freely guide you- to wield your intelligence, your determination, your strength, or simply your life. Is the beast in front of you Fys? Surely it cannot be-- though it is large, it is too small to be the entire world, you think. You feel it may be someone else, but someone important. As you awaken, you feel both a deep dread and the sense that you are loved- both by Aria's voice, and by whatever awakens beneath your feet.

Option A: Visual Art

Draw your character's dream as a collage, vignette, or splash image. A splash image is an image which acts as a summary of events, often portraying either the main moment in an event, or having multiple moments in one image (example | example).

The common themes of the dream is darkness, stars, and being spoken to by Aria through the mouth of a family member, friend, enemy, or stranger. Aria may also show your character visions specific to them in order to motivate them, so you are free to change or specify the contents of your character's dream.

Minimum Visual Art requirements:

  • 1 halfbody character
  • sketch
  • flat colors OR shading
  • Platform Background, Partial Background, or Simple Background
Option B: Literature

Write about your character's vision from Aria. Include a couplet somewhere in the literature!

The common themes of the dream is darkness, stars, and being spoken to by Aria through the mouth of a family member, friend, enemy, or stranger. Aria often speaks in rhythm but this isn't necessarily always in song or rhyme. She may also show your character visions specific to them in order to motivate them, so you are free to change or specify the contents of your character's dream.

Minimum Literature requirements:

  • 400 word minimum

Storm Chasing

There is energy to be gathered in the storm. View more details for requirements.

Details

Riding the storm is a dangerous job. Some choose to fly using naturally given wings-- others fly through aerowings, machines crafted for navigating the skies. Aerowings can only be used during an Aria Storm, as they rely on the vast charges of Fysa and Aria in the atmosphere to have enough power to function. Miles-long slipstreams of Fysa which are generated by large Aria Storms allow an aerowing flyer to arrive at the storm within minutes.

Some fly the storms in organized races-- many of which are dangerous. Others do it while hauling uncharged Esse-- the storms are the fastest way to charge huge amounts of Esse. Being dangerous, it pays well. Others deploy themselves into the storms to slay feral daemons in an attempt to make the wilds safer.

Option A: Visual Art

Draw a character racing in the storm, travelling in a storm, charging their Esse, or otherwise interacting with the weather.

Minimum Visual Art requirements:

  • Halfbody

Deepsea Fishing

There is life, however unlikely, in the oceans. View more details for requirements.

Details

Food from the oceans has somehow become an unlikely important source-- although the oceans themselves are poisonous, the life that remains there has adapted wonderously and the creatures are often purative in nature. This makes them important for diets and also for creating medicines used in curing both Fysa and Aria poisoning.

Sailing the seas is a dangerous job. Anyone who falls in is likely to fall ill, at least temporarily, with Fysa poisoning. There are also chances to be caught in Fysa rains or Aria storms when out on the open ocean. Diving is the most dangerous job of all-- divers don protective garments and go to the ocean floor in order to collect easily reached shellfish and aquatic life, set traps, and gather resources. Although the equipment is protective against Fysa, it can tear or leak, and being attacked by wildlife is a strong possibility.

Many underwater ruins exist, and these places are frequented by divers looking to strike it rich. Other divers are scholars, looking to study the unique creatures to find a way to surpass Fysa poisoning.

Option A: Visual Art

Draw a character fishing, at the beach, or on open water.

  • Halfbody
  • Sketch

Wilds Exploration

In the remnants of civilization, life flourishes. View more details for requirements.

Details

Ruins dot the wild landscapes of Orrison frequently. Remnants of both high and low cities provide equal opportunity for findings, as the buildings provide shelter for wildlife and can even harbor old technology to be discovered.

Exploring can be dangerous, as feral daemons can feed off of the Fysa of old generators and buildings to survive and are aggressive when encountered. Old architecture can be filled with security, or simply crumble from old age. Artifacts, when found, are unpredictable-- though many provide wonderous powers, others are often cursed or dangerous.

Scholars, merchants, mercenaries, and even craftsmen can all find things that are useful and valuable in these ancient ruins... Though, the most commonly found material tends to be vibrant plant life.

Option A: Visual Art

Draw a character exploring the wilds, searching ruins, or interacting with wild fauna/flora.

  • Sketch
  • Flat colors OR Shading

Daemon Hunting

Daemons are both a nuisance and a resource. View more details for requirements.

Details

Due to the storms, Fysa and Aria mixes much more frequently than normal. This spawns feral daemons, who are drawn to strong sources of magic for sustenance. This makes feral daemons dangerous as they will attack people and places. While feral daemons will fade with time, if daemons infest a location with lots of magic (such as ruins), they can remain alive long enough to weather the time between storms, and their number grows out of hand.

Not only do daemons need to be dealt with, but people will pay to have infestations removed. Daemon parts can also be a resource for naturalists.

Option A: Visual Art

Draw a character with their weapon of choice, fighting a daemon, or recovering from injuries.

Minimum Visual Art requirements:

  • Halfbody
  • Sketch
  • Flat colors OR Shading
  • Platform Background, Partial Background, or Simple Background

Hungry Depths

The depths are as greedy as those who delve into it. View more details for requirements.

Details

There are several ways to journey beneath the surface in search of wealth. The earth is considered the flesh of Fys, and one should not underestimate the dangers posed in its corpse.

In Ynochrin, the chimoraa tunnels go deep. Unable to have gone up for so many years, they have gone down. A wealth of ore exists to be collected, and some tunnels even lead to buried ruins. Still, there are dangers here-- not all tunnels are well maintained, and rogues have even been exiled into the depths.

In Immitheus, the research center is part of a buried city. Ruins can still be explored here.

Characters can mine, explore, map, and more. There are other things to do rather than gather ore-- discovery of new fauna and flora are important, as are research efforts regarding the caves. Reading the soil, testing new methods of growing food, and following leylines of magic through the earth are important tasks that can be done.

Option A: Visual Art

Draw a character exploring underground- this can be in any ruin or mine, though Ynochrin and Immitheus are the biggest options.

Minimum Visual Art requirements:

  • Halfbody
  • Sketch
  • Flat colors OR Shading
  • Platform Background, Partial Background, or Simple Background
Option B: Literature

This nightmarket deals in artifacts, dangerous weapons, and poached goods. In addition to those who trade in the Nightmarket are those who try to thwart it-- Aegis sometimes, but more frequently vigilantes who take things into their own hands.

Please be sure to appropriately warn/tag any heavy material (including extreme gore, drug use, violence, etc).

Option A: Visual Art

Fauna Submission

Category: Soul Searching

Submit a species of fauna to the world of Orrison!

Details

You can submit potential species for fauna for the World of Orrison here! This includes both Pet species, Mount species, and wild untameable fauna.

Note that we reserve the rights to decline any species if we feel it does not fit in the world. We also may decline a species if we feel it is too similar to an existing or planned species, or if its niche is already filled (ex: any sheep-esque species will be declined as Wolls already exist, for example).

Your prompt will be accepted if all the information is present and you will get the award, however Submission is not a guarantee of acceptance and even if your prompt is accepted, your species may not be integrated into the world. We will let you know in the submission comments!

Also, just because your content is declined does not mean that it is not a good idea! Many times, it simply may not fit with our idea of Orrison- we strongly encourage declined content to be implemented elsewhere as it remains your property.

Use Rights

Note that by submitting a species to the World of Orrison, you are accepting that your intellectual property is becoming a part of the World of Orrison as an open species. This means that others are allowed to freely make characters of this species, and that moderators are allowed to alter, edit, use, or derive things from your species concept. You may use your own creature in other works, however cannot force people to give up their characters of this species in the future.

Please fill out the following information and submit it to this prompt. You may submit your creature through a google doc, toyhouse page, or any other hub of information.

Bulletin and Forum Submission

Category: Bulletin Board

These are user-made prompts! Submit bulletins here.

Details

The bulletin board is a section of prompts for users to submit prompts featuring their own characters as an NPC! When approved, these prompts will be put onto the site for others to complete.

Note that we reserve the rights to decline any prompt if we feel it does not fit in the world. We also may decline a prompt if we feel it is too similar to an existing or planned prompt, or if its niche is already filled (ex: other prompts with similar premises, or other prompts with the same reward).

Your submission will be accepted if all the information is present and you will get the award, however Submission is not a guarantee of acceptance and even if your submission is accepted, your prompt may not be integrated into the world. We will let you know in the submission comments! Sometimes, prompts may also be delayed to allow others to have a chance or to space activities out.

Also, just because your content is declined does not mean that it is not a good idea! Many times, it simply may not fit with our idea of Orrison- we strongly encourage declined content to be implemented elsewhere as it remains your property.

By submitting a bulletin, you are agreeing that it is okay for others to make art or literature depictions of your character. These depictions may not be 100% accurate, but you are not obligated to accept them as canon. A bulletin poster is not obligated to comment on fanart of their character. If you would like your bulletin removed from the site, you can either set a timer for the prompt (ex: 1 month) or submit a report to request its removal.
Option A: Individual

Your character as a single unaffiliated individual can host a prompt! They will be acting as an NPC for the prompt, requesting help with a task or providing a story for others to work off of. In many cases, this implies permission to use this character in prompt-related work.

You can choose a single reward to offer that fits within your prompt or character's theme. The more valuable a reward, the harder the prompt requirements should be. You can also provide a smaller reward for a smaller minimum requirement (like reflections prompts).

Rewards that are randomized bags or base crafting materials such as heavy ores can be repeated once monthly. Rewards that have a specific higher quality item such as a species item or a larger amount of Esse can only be completed once per person.

You may also set a limited run time for your prompt. The prompt will be put into the archive once it is over.

If the terms of the prompt need to be negotiated (such as rewards, run time, or requirements) moderators will DM you to ask!

Individual prompts will be put into the Bulletin Board Category once up!

Option B: Circle

Circles can host a prompt! They will be acting as an NPC for the prompt. This can be exclusive or open-- in the case it is exclusive, non-members can still submit but it will be considered non-canon alternate universe scenario (ex: an exclusive prompt where a character is drawn in the circle's uniform, anyone not in the circle is just an AU but can still submit). Open prompts are for situations where the circle needs help outside of their specialty, or simply needs more bodies to complete a task.

Otherwise, the rules for a circle prompt are similar to the rules for an individual prompt in regards to the rewards, run time, and requirements, so please read those for reference. Multiple circle members can serve as NPC's, but all must give permission in the form below.

Individual prompts will be put into the Circles' Forum Category once up!

Use Rights

Note that by submitting a prompt to the World of Orrison, you are accepting that your intellectual property is becoming a part of the World of Orrison as an activity. This means that others are allowed to freely interpret this content, and that moderators are allowed to alter, edit, use, or derive things from your prompt. You may reuse your writing in other places and may request removal at any time.

Performers of all kinds are also drafted from all far reaches of The Claws, ushered in with the promise of substantial esse in exchange for a display of their talents on the stage.

The proprietor’s motives are not quite as virtuous as they seem. A fanatic of Aria of the Dischoir, the performers Khada enlists are unwittingly playing out the melodies she has whispered to him, and by parroting these back out to the world he hopes that one day she may hear them. And through them, find her way out from the fabric of dreams.
