He addresses the crowd, and his voice cracks as he tries to speak up.
W-- we are looking for any information regarding the series of disappearances and killings that have occurred recently! We.. we are offering Esse to those who provide this information. If you have any questions, I will do my best to answer them!
If you provide the information that you obtain from your INVESTIGATION rolls on discord today, you will get 1 esse! You must make your posts in character.

Loch's body language is carefully unreadable, tone of voice flat.
People're saying the effigies that got burned tonight're different from the ones that went up yesterday. You said something about a reward for my intel?
(Edited 2020-10-26 00:36:17)
The Ptheran suddenly looks indignant.
We've had Aegis posted in the square the entire time! The feat of magic that would require is... unless...
He trails off, but still looks concerned as he hands a glowing Speck over for the trouble.
You're 100% sure?
One Esse has been granted.
(Edited 2020-10-25 20:48:07)
He pauses, only answering once the Speck has been safely pocketed.
Pretty sure, yeah. 'Less you think the guys that put 'em up were lying.
(Edited 2020-10-26 00:36:02)
No it's not that... I...
The ptheran bites their lip, looking Loch up and down as if to gauge trustworthiness. Apparently, they find something lacking in Loch's character.
... Only think that they must be mistaken. Not only is that extremely difficult, I don't see how one person could replace all those effigies with heavy cadavers in just one night.
The ptheran isn't voicing their full thoughts, but their incredulity is easy to see.
Loch lifts their chin, sizing the ptheran up.
Look, I'm tryin' to help here. I'm gonna need some more info. You don't think it could'a been more than one person? Why're you ruling that out so quick?
(Edited 2020-10-26 00:38:32)
Because that means it's more ridiculous that no Aegis saw anything!
The watcher rubs their temples beneath their hair with one hand, obviously incensed at their own outburst. More quietly, they add,
It means more crimes are being committed here than just murder.
Loch leans away just slightly, stiffening at the ptheran's strong reaction.
There was already more'n murder goin' on here. The original effigies were stolen, yeah? Had to be, to get these in their place.
(Edited 2020-10-26 00:38:59)
The watcher goes quiet. Then, setting his jaw, he says quietly and slowly.
I'm not going to stand around and accept conspiracies, unless you have further proof.
Loch straightens up, gesturing in the vague direction of the people he questioned earlier.
I understand this is a stressful situation for you, but I already told you the guys that put 'em up all agree these're different'n the ones that were here yesterday.
What d'you suppose that means, huh? That the sick fucks that swapped 'em for corpses asked permission? 'Cause if not, that's called stealing. Unless you think whoever swapped 'em was one of the guys that owned the originals. I'd love to hear you justify that one.
Vala looked over to Loch as she hummed thoughtfully. Thinking about what she had found
I noticed that there's a strange path leading away from the scene of the crime! It looks like a body was dragged here from somewhere wet......but why would they try to burn a wet body? Not very sensible if you ask me.
(Edited 2020-10-25 20:19:17)
The watcher looks at Vala with confusion, but then nods along as Vala explains.
You said... a body. Just the one. The others weren't wet? So they were all killed at different times, then.
One Esse has been granted! In the future, it's probably better to reply to the main post to start your thread with the NPC so it doesn't get lost!
Rhiath straightens up as he approaches, his fur fluffing up a bit, though his crown flickers briefly and his tail sways nervously.
"Upon asking around, it appears that disappearances have become more... common. I hate to say it, but numbers suggest there may even be more bodies, yet to be found. Disappearances have been especially frequent in both the north and the west side of town."
talksprite done by the wonderful silver
(Edited 2020-10-26 03:27:37)
The watcher seems appreciative of Rhiath's approach and information.
That'll help us narrow down our search. I hope that further disappearances don't occur-- but we should strengthen our patrols there in case they do. Many thanks.
The watcher flips Rhiath some Esse, then clears their throat.
You're not going to go walking around there, are you? I mean... just be mindful. There's talk of strange lights. More strange than usual, if you know what I mean. I don't think a chimia is behind all this after all.
The Rrex listens closely, eyebrows raising at the new information, before dropping back down in worry. He pockets the Esse with one hand, barely paying it any mind, then speaks up again.
"I certainly appreciate the warning."
He pauses briefly, seeming hesitant.
"What makes you believe no chimia are involved? Especially given the lights, they would come to mind as likely suspects to me. If not for the effigies themselves... at least for the initial disappearances. Or have you ruled out multiple perpetrators being involved?"
(Edited 2020-10-26 04:13:57)
Kae patiently waits until others have cleared themselves from speaking to The Watcher, her voice relatively soft as to keep this strictly between them.
"I did some searching and noted that some suspicious looking footprints on the trail near the effigy lead over to the square were council meets are held, and they went out further parallel to the wall that would separate the square from the town entirely. They were definitely trying to be sneaky, if it's them... It also seemed to belong to a folk with feet bigger than a leyr, though I can't be certain on exactly what species they might belong to. . . Sorry."
The watcher bows their head to Kae's level.
Don't apologize. Any defining features are better than none at all. This is all rather contrived for... I don't know, I suppose I never imagined killers to be cautious, but I suppose I've only dealt with murders done in the heat of the moment. Duels gone wrong and all that. What do you suppose they're trying to say?
Her ear twitches nervously, more of less unsure of what the implications could be. All she could really do is guess, given this isn't her expertise.
"Maybe they're trying to put out a message? Instill fear and all. That's the only reason I think they'd pull a calculated stunt like this.. It's horrible."
She signs, her expression grim.
Maybe it's Ilya...
The watcher shivers visibly.
Chara appears calm as they approach, though they sound a bit anxious.
"I asked some of the Aegis if anything had happened after the effigies were constructed. One told me they smelled this morning, but he didn't think much of it."
The watcher's expression doesn't change as far as you can see, though you have the feeling they're raising an eyebrow under their fringe.
Still, they hesitantly offer Chara a Speck, hoping to get them to share more details.
Chara nods their head in the direction of the Aegis they spoke to.
"Uh, yeah, he could smell the bodies. He said he assumed someone had a bad lunch. I suppose it's a bit weird he went to bodies before effigies, but I don't think it's much to go off of.
Someone else made a comment on how the killer must be trying to get caught. I doubt it, though they definitely wanted the bodies to be found."
(Edited 2020-10-26 02:55:10)
To cause fear... yes, a few others were murmering about things like that. Or... maybe it's a sign of frustration? That's why we burn effigies.
The watcher shakes their head.
No use wondering about stuff like that. Thank you so much for your time.
Lakas tentatively approaches, anxiously gripping his staff.
I'm sorry, but uhm, I just -- what if the-- this. Is some sort of diversion for, uhm, for something worse?
It just... seems a bit much, I don't know. I can't make sense of why someone would --
The watcher stares at Lakas appraisingly, taking in their demeanor and their staff. They approve of the staff.
It doesn't make much sense at all.
They agree, sounding exasperated and a little lost.
Are you suggesting we be careful for something happening in the near future...?
Myrrh slouches some as he approaches to seem a little less tall and less like he might know what he's doing. He speaks carefully.
Some to the north smelled something off, though it's been moved now. I assume that that might have been related in some way to the situation at hand.
He's quiet for a moment before he continues.
I believe that this was done as some sort of message, though I doubt that speculation helps much. I just don't see another reason for doing it in a place and time such as this.
(Edited 2020-10-26 23:04:33)
The watcher tilts their head at Myrrh. The rrex has a demeanor that's slightly sad and slightly mysterious, something The Watcher aspires to achieve.
So... another body.
The ptheran sighs and hands Myrrh a glowing speck for the trouble.
Do you think it's pro-council or anti-council? Since... it did involve the council's effigies...
Myrrh looks the speck over, dipping his head in thanks as he pockets it. He looks back over at where the effigies had been, frowning, before looking back at the ptheran.
I'm not entirely sure yet. Without more messaging, the motive isn't entirely clear. I believe that it's likely either anti-council or unrelated to them entirely. Their effigies could've just been used to limit people noticing until it was lit.
He sighs and crosses his arms.
Have you heard anything that might be useful? I... am not currently part of any guard force, but I'd like to assist where I can.
(Edited 2020-10-26 23:05:16)
The watcher seems to perk up at the mention of past service.
But you were? Er--
They stop themselves-- then... the watcher also crosses their arms, staff held in the crook of their elbow.
I appreciate it-- .... I mean WE appreciate it. The victims' bodies are being kept with the Undertaker, and have experienced some savage bite marks. Someone brought me some leaves which survived the burning, and they came from swamp trees. Maybe... further north? Further north than the north of town?
(Edited 2020-10-26 01:39:14)
Maridee approaches the Watcher, daemon held close in one hand, something small clutched in the other. They appear nervous, squishing the daemon's soft back comfortingly.
I found these in one of the effigies....
They hold out their hand, revealing a few leaves and yellowed string.
Do you know where they might have come from?
(Edited 2020-10-25 23:45:15)
The watcher's eyes also fall on the Daemon, saving Maridee from the full force of the ptheran's scrutiny. Their eyes then fall on the outstretched palm and its contents. The watcher picks up the string-- then, feeling foolish, sniffs it.
There's not many trees with leaves like this in the city. They only grow in swamps and water. The string though? I have no idea.
They return the items to Maridee, along with an esse coin.
Pizazz trods up to the ptheran, patiently waiting for a moment to speak.
"Excuse me Mr. Watcher! I asked the Undertaker if I could examine the remains, and from what I saw the fires were stopped before the entire body was burned. There don't seem to be any uniting characteristics throughout the group, but I didnt look extremely closely. Random species, random appearances. Odd no?"
(Edited 2020-10-26 00:07:56)
So... the killer attacked on opportunity?
The watcher passes Pizazz a Speck.
I wonder if we should impose a curfew...
(Edited 2020-10-26 01:29:21)
After waiting for the others talking to the Watcher to disperse, Motka approaches with a slip of paper in his hand.
"Hi!" he chirps, and flaps the note at the ptheran obnoxiously.
"I talked to the vendors around here," he says, pretending like he hadn't actually terrorized them - even going so far as to bully one to tears.
"One gave me this interesting piece. Here, read it. It says something about some suspicious people that were around setting up the effigies. Did you notice anything like that?"
Iphae flew down and landed a few paces in front of The Watcher. He roughly pushed past the few citizens standing ahead of him, his intense gaze focused on the ptheran he was to talk to.
I've been to the Undertaker and looked over the corpses. One leyr made it through the blaze somewhat unscathed. It was covered in bite marks, though the damage was too sloppy to determine if it was a sentient creature or just some varmint looking for a snack.
Iphae folded his arms stiffly across his chest as he narrowed his eyes at this supposed watcher.
Do you have anything for me? Besides the coin you owe me for my intel. Information that could make my search for this killer any easier.
