Ceremony

Legacy was important for Empresian rrex, and wedding ceremonies used to consist of a formal reading of the accounts of the family-- both historical and financial. Assets were formally joined, and the crests of the families were merged in a new design. Some rrex would choose a new, shared name, which would be used when referring to the partners as a whole rather than individuals (like a family name).

For Rhotian rrex, ceremony was much more casual and documentation of marriages was not important. Relationships were fluid, waxing and waning with tide, time, and circumstance. Tokens were often exchanged between lovers, most often as matching earrings, rings, or bands. These tokens are either commissioned for this specific purpose, or even handmade by the partners themselves. The memory of the relationship was important.

Torian rrex introduced vows which are still spoken in ceremonies today, between all species:

(Torian vows, spoken simultaneously)
"I have found a reflection of my own self in you. You complete the circle of my story, a cycle which I am honored to uphold. I bind my essence to yours, in prayer that we may persist through this life and the next together, and I vow to be the moon to the river of your spirit. Orridaelos, Orridaerrin."

Rrex tend to enjoy making a show of strength and power, but restraint also goes hand in hand with this. Many rrex enjoy praise in the bedroom, though they can be rather reluctant to offer it in turn-- compliments are normally extremely genuine, not given lightly. Light nipping tends to be frequent in foreplay, and rrex will often entwine their tail with their partner.

Sex can be a valid way of resolving disputes or settling favors.

Immanu

Ceremony

Immanu are the ones who introduced the concept of a family crest. Romantic groups and pairs will often create themselves a design of a simple pictograph of sorts. The glyphs are written in Old Immithese which looks a lot like the glyphs used in composed magic. This form of the language is not used in common day to day practice and is open to wide interpretation.

All members of a union paint this crest on their wrists, tails, chest, or some other part of their body- or if they take after Rhotian custom, they wear it on a piece of jewelry. It is a loving gesture of acknowledgement and dedication, although most only perform this daily ritual for formal events. The most dedicated choose to get the crest tattooed.

It is not required for a crest to be registered with the Archivist, but many groups will have records made of their family lines using their crests. There is no legal limit to how many partners one can register and no limits on interspecies relations, but partnerships tend to be 2-3 individuals.

Non-Immanu also design and wear family crests, even if nobody in the union is an immanu- the practice is now wide spread.

Wedding gifts are expected to be custom items bearing the colors or markings of the new family's crest.

Leyr

leyr displaying affection

Attachment

Leyr behaviors of attachment tend to be similar to humans- but it should be noted that trust and affection are not always equal to one another. Leyr tend to be slow to trust as their kind have often had to stay on guard- to protect their corvigere or even just themselves. They tend to be slighter in stature, their defensive mechanisms unreliable at times, so to prevent accidents they tend not to put themselves in situations that require the use of their beast form.

Once a leyr trusts an individual however, they can be blindly loyal to them, to a fault.

Ceremony

The Undertaker is the corvigere who officiates bonding ceremonies, though records are kept with the Archivist. Standing stones mark the earth in the burial grounds, a place where past meets future. The Undertaker gives a reading of fortunes and advice for a happier future to the new pair bond. This is a private ceremony- celebrations occur later among family and friends.

Anyone, even a non-leyr, can request the Undertaker officiate a marriage, or celebrate respectfully and privately at the standing stones.

Romantic Intimacy

Leyr enjoy holding hands, kisses, scritches, and preening-- most of these behaviors are reserved for significant others or for courtship. Leyr do not normally allow themselves to be lifted/held by larger creatures as it exemplifies their smaller size, but they'll allow it for their partners.

Luto

Attachment

Lutum become strongly attached to their companions. If a Luto makes a long standing friend with sentient creature of another species, they will reincarnate that friend into a Luto when the friend passes away. This is considered a high honor among most non-lutum, as it is a form of life after death.

Lutum are known to be fierce protectors. They will go to great lengths to protect their companions and their home, and seeing as they feel no physical pain and can be hard to destroy, they make surprisingly terrifying opponents. They have enough judgement to attack targets based on their mal-intent and threat level.

It is not uncommon for Lutum to adopt the substrate matter or plant life of a fallen companion's bodies, or to take their accessories/weapons/clothing as tokens of remembrance.

Ceremony

Lutum do not need ceremony to feel their bond permanently cemented to another being, but they are more than merry to participate in or mimic the ceremony that many other species hold.

Luto do not reproduce sexually and do not have any form of sexual attraction-- the sole reason they would attempt to understand sexuality is in order to comprehend a friend's identity better, as identity is extremely important to Luto society. Although they are basically asexual by nature, many luto do not balk at (or sometimes even enjoy) intimate interactions with beloved friends or partners. They are not ignorant to the needs of others, though they will not be forced into it as a "duty" but rather as a bonding activity.

Chimia

chimia displaying affection

Attachment

Chimia courtship is normally high energy but for short periods of time. Chimia are often fine with spending lengths of time apart, and when reunited with their significant friends and lovers, their joy is explosive and heady and strong until they part ways again. Chimia often need lots of friends aside from their significant other(s), and polyamory is also quite common-- it is treated casually, but with great emphasis on communication.

Once a relationship has begun to become quite serious, a chimia can become very clingy- they like to be involved in many facets of a partner's life, and do not like to be left out. Being cut out of the work of a partnered life can make them feel infantalized and smothered. More than anything, they love to build new experiences with a partner-- travelling every so often with a chimia partner will do wonders for their mood.

In a monogamy, a chimia can be high maintenance, requiring a large amount of energy and attention from their partner. In an open relationship, they're still fiercely loyal to their main partner and tend not to take advantage of the freedom they've been given. In a poly relationship, they're able to juggle multiple intimate relationships, their energy more evenly distributed.

Ceremony

Chimian tradition dictates that the hands of the bonded are tied together loosely with a cloth. Some do this during the day of the officiation, while others wait for the celebration a month later (see Ptheran Ceremony). Letting go is a bad omen that the marriage won't go well, and has led to break ups in the past- but mostly, it just leads to shenanigans and levity as the partner(s) attempt to go about life attached to one another.

Romantic Intimacy

Chimia are not afraid to show intimacy-- they're used to climbing up and on larger species, and play fighting with their peers in wrestling games. They'll hold hands, arms, legs, tails, etc, without a fear-- a lot of intimacy from other species can be misread as platonic by a chimia.

Grooming behaviors, scritches, whispering, and hugging can also be both platonic and romantic, but chimia will show a preference towards romantic partners in who gets what attention.

Chimia keep themselves busy during sex- they tend not to idle, making full use of their hands and feet. Many (but not all) enjoy chatter or at least noise, and it can be discouraging to have a quiet partner. Being overwhelmed and attempting to overwhelm their partner is a fun game. Touching underneath the base of the tail is an explicitly sexual gesture.

Ptheran

.

Ceremony

Ptheran culture comes through in the post-wedding celebration.

The month after the officiation is spent in self-imposed isolation of all partners from one another. They can still see friends and family, but are not to visit or see one another. Every day, a letter is written to the other partner(s), but none of them are sent. It is a time of reflection, appreciation, and self control.

At the end of the long wait, the community prepares a banquet. Everyone dons masks and robes and each partner has their own procession to the feast with solemn singing. When the lovers meet at the place of celebration, they remove their masks and embrace, and are named by their shared name if they have one (see Rrex Ceremony).

At this point, others may remove their masks, but most do not! Dancing and singing ensues, and many looking for their own prospective partners enjoy the thrill of the anonymous matchups.

The letters from before are exchanged later in the privacy of the night, and they are read aloud all night long to one another.
